Name: Viridi
Epithets: Goddess of Nature, Ruler of the Earth and All Living Things
Commanders/Notable Allies: Phosphora, the Lightning Flash; Arlon, the Serene; Cragalanche, the Mighty

Powers/Duties: Much as her original name of Nature implies, Viridi is the manifestation of nature and all it represents, as well as its most powerful defender. Viridi is responsible for the creation of a large number of species across the earth, although not every last one. Humans, in particular, were more of a group effort, with the idea that they would honor and respect the gods who had created them [1,2]. The majority of plants and land animals, however, do owe their existence to her efforts. Regardless of who claims what, she refers to all living things and her creations especially as her children and considers them as such.  She cherishes them greatly because even if they were incapable of worshiping her, they had 'heart' [3]. The key note there is 'living', as she considers all undead creatures and Underworld forces to be abominations [4].

As one would expect from the goddess of nature, Viridi governs over the affairs of all living things, ensuring that they interact the way they're meant to and that no one species gets out of hand. This doesn't mean perfect peace - nature is designed for rough and tumble interactions. What is meant when Viridi refers to the balance of nature is vague and entirely dependent on her whims. Whatever it is, it seems to have worked for a very long time. Her duties take a lot of micromanaging, as one might expect, and Viridi didn't even turn up very often in the old days because of how busy she was [5].

In regards to natural disasters, they can occasionally be blamed on her anger or even her mistakes. She is not, however, directly responsible for all of them, as other deities generally take responsibility for things like lightning or the ocean [6]. Being the ruler of the earth, however, earthquakes are almost always her fault and can be blamed entirely upon her, though she'll deny that it has anything whatsoever to do with her dance practice.

Historically, Viridi acted through chosen heroes and mediators. Though she enjoys divine intervention as much as the next god, she does understand the importance of letting mortals choose their own destiny. ...Or at least she did prior to her rage spiraling out of control. In any case, when chosen by Viridi, heroes are capable of anything from flight to teleportation-facilitated retreats to full-on revival from death.

History [Headcanon]:
In times long past, the goddess of nature was well-beloved and worshiped widely by almost every group of humans that populated the earth - all agricultural societies, of course. She was known as a generally benevolent goddess who gave bountifully, but who displayed great temper in the form of natural disasters when angered. As noted above, this was not entirely fair, but the reputation stuck, nonetheless. She communicated directly with mankind on very rare occasions, but usually had her wishes made known through her druids and priests.

As the centuries passed, humanity grew restless as they began to move past their rural roots. Civilization was in full swing, and her true followers begin to dwindle, though the majority continued to pay lip service. Her desires were often ignored in favor of 'progress', which translated to her as 'more wealth'. She allowed things to continue without her intervention in the hopes that this was merely some sort of phase.  This was the beginning of her animosity towards humanity.

At some point in time, a great evil appeared in the world, posing a threat to anything with a soul, even the gods.  Alone of all the gods, Viridi took action against this threat due to her strong connection with life and began to wage war against the Chaos Kin, the inhabitants of the Chaos Vortex, and the clone army they created.  She even broke the unacknowledged rules of the gods to partake in personal combat, alongside her longstanding allies, Arlon and Phosphora. In the end, Viridi and her generals were victorious in subduing the Chaos Kin. She was unable to destroy it completely, however, and instead, imprisoned it high above the Earth in a prison that she believed to be untouchable. It became a fortress known as the Lunar Sanctum, and she assigned Arlon to watch over it for the many years to come. Viridi and her Forces of Nature were severely weakened by this struggle, and it took many years for her to fully recover.

Chaos Kin aside, the humans continued to devolve further into a boundlessly selfish evil.  Viridi was shocked and appalled to find, when she had recovered her strength, that they had strayed even further from their intended path, waging ceaseless wars and casually destroying every part of the earth they could lay their hands on.  In vain, she appealed to them to stop their wanton destruction, but they had gone too long without her guidance to pay her any more mind.  Watching and seething for centuries and centuries, she finally reached a breaking point when the humans launched into a fanatical struggle over the fake wish of the Phoenix, razing vast swathes of the land in their wake.

She chose to utilize her ultimate weapon and the rest is history.

[1] "They've strayed too far from their intended path. That's where my Reset Bombs come in. To help return Earth to its natural state!"
[2] "Humans have faith and devotion. That's what I mean by heart. Only humans believe in gods... Only humans respect the gods."
[3] "These brutes have a complete disregard for life. They're even worse than humans!"
[4] "Nuh-uh!  All living creatures have an essence that can be described as heart."
[5] Viridi had never met Palutena, despite both of them being quite powerful goddesses governing over many different affairs.
[6] Phosphora, the Lightning Flash; Poseidon, the god of the ocean; Zeus exists as well in the Kid Icarus universe.
